Profiles: Russ Vento

Russ Vento has been an integral part of Battaglia Farms since 1989, contributing to the farm’s success in many ways as partner and co-owner. With wide-ranging expertise and 30 years of experience, Vento manages the farm’s extensive breeding operation and coordinates its promotion and advertising campaigns. The breeding stallions that Vento manages are some of the most proven sires available, from Justafire DGL to the American Saddlebred stallions WGC Revival, and Heirogance & Attitude. Vento has been closely involved with breeding management throughout his career in horses, and his knowledge and talents are evident in his attainment of high conception rates. Vento’s vigilant attention to detail, as well as his belief in clear, honest communication, also creates a satisfied, loyal clientele of mare owners.

Vento is also a successful amateur showman, having shown, bred and/or owned 35 U.S., Canadian and National Show Horse Champions. He shares his experiences and lessons learned with fellow amateur riders in a column for Arabian Horse Times magazine called “An Amateur Point of View.” His daughter Skyler, now a college freshman, showed as a youth rider and followed in her father’s footsteps, earning numerous National Championship titles. Vento says that as much as he has enjoyed the successes of the past, he looks forward to the future, as horses that he and Bob Battaglia have bred will be coming of age for their show ring debuts.

Vento has been awarded the APAHA Horsemen’s Award twice—for Amateur Performance Male of the Year in 2001 and for Amateur Halter Competitor of the Year in 2004. He has also been an in-demand, large R judge for nearly a decade.
